Permits, visa and the logistics of Tibet

The Tibet Autonomous Region is closed to independent tourism. Buying a ticket, flying in and working things out on the spot is not an option here: you can enter Tibet only through a licensed agency, with a complete set of permits and an itinerary approved in advance.

What we need from you

• A passport valid for at least six months beyond the end of the trip.
• A Chinese visa — an ordinary tourist visa, obtained through the standard procedure.
• Scans of your documents on time: the permit is issued against your passport and visa details, and any delay shifts the whole chain.

What we do

The Tibet Travel Permit (TTB) is the key document: without it you will not be allowed onto a plane or a train to Lhasa. The Kailash area and Ngari prefecture require additional papers — a border-zone permit and an alien travel permit for the route. All of them are arranged by our receiving partner at our request.

The originals reach the group shortly before departure rather than being handed to each traveller in advance. That is how the procedure works, and it is normal.

Timing

A comfortable margin is six to eight weeks before the start. The visa takes a week or more; the permit is issued roughly two to three weeks before the trip. Anything faster is done on nerves, with no room for error.

Logistics inside Tibet

A local Tibetan guide and driver accompany the group throughout — a requirement, not a service upgrade: without a licensed guide a group has no right to travel in the region. The Russian-speaking group leader travels separately from that role and is responsible for what happens inside the group.

Risks worth knowing about in advance

Tibet is periodically closed to foreigners without notice, for days or weeks, usually around sensitive dates in the calendar. This is not the operator failing you and it is no reason to panic: we build in reserve dates and set out the rescheduling terms in the contract beforehand.

If a trip does not happen because the region closed, the money is not lost: the date changes, not the journey.
