Evening on the shore of Lake Manasarovar

Manasarovar: the lake where the kora begins

A lake at 4,590 m where pilgrims stop before circling the mountain — and why the pause matters.

A day before Darchen the road comes out at Manasarovar. This is a freshwater lake at 4,590 metres, and almost everyone travelling to Kailash ends up on its shore — usually in the evening, when the light is already low and the water turns dense.

Why people come here before the kora

In four traditions — Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Bon — Manasarovar is a place of purification before circling the mountain. Pilgrims wash, take water with them and only then go on to Darchen. The logic is simple and very physical: stop first, then walk.

For someone arriving without a religious question it works just as well. The evening on the shore is the one pause in the itinerary where there is nothing to keep up with.

What is here

  • Water so clear that the bottom is visible several metres down; swimming is cold even in July.
  • Chiu monastery on the rock above the northern shore — a short climb and the best view of the lake.
  • Hot springs nearby: not a spa, just plain baths, but after the road that counts for a lot.
  • A night in a guesthouse on the shore — simple, cold and one of the most memorable of the trip.

And the lake next door

Beside it lies Rakshastal, almost the same size and entirely salt. A narrow isthmus separates them. In the Tibetan tradition the two lakes are read as a pair: light and dark, living and dead. Standing between them says more than any explanation.

Practicalities

The shore is at 4,590 m, almost a kilometre above Lhasa. The night here is often the first genuinely high one of the route and is harder than those before it. That is by design: the body takes on the altitude in advance, before the pass.

The kora does not begin in Darchen but here, on the evening when there is nothing left to do.
